*The donut that wasn’t – March 7, 2011

Chocolate covered donut

"Mmmmm Can I have it?!"

I don’t know what the big deal is. Why can’t I have the donut? Mom left it right where I could smell it and see it. It was just out of my reach. I tried and tried to get it, stretching my paws as far as I could, the counter was just too high :(  it’s just not fair if you ask me.

This morning there was a half of a donut left and she THREW IT OUT! She said since no one ate it, the donut had dried out over night….well, wait…I told her I WOULD EAT IT!! Did she not hear me?!

Unhappy Pug

One unhappy pug!

Today is a boring day. The wind is blowing and the air is still too cold for me to stay out there any length of time. I like those warm days when we can go to the park and run! Hoping a warmer day will come sooner rather than later.

To top of the morning, mom chased me around to put those damn eye drops in. She finally gave up..but I think it’s a trick, so I’m keeping my eye on her. She’s been having the boy hold me when he gets home from school while she puts the drops in…I am not digging that so much. She said they will make my eyes all better, but I still hate the drops..they are cold and wet…two things I hate!  Oh oh, I just saw her get some cotton balls and Q-tips out….I think it’s time to go hide…Until next time….

Rainy Day – March 6, 2011

Published by under Pug Adventures

Pug in the rain

"No, it's raining out, I'll pass..."

I have never seen anything so pathetic in all my life. It’s been raining all weekend, for the most part, and as we all know, Otis HATES the rain. Yesterday he refused to go out and do his after dinner business (he only went long enough to empty his bladder then he ran back in!) So, this morning I knew he HAD to go out to do more than just pee. I remembered I had a rain coat for him (ordered from Pug Snuggly!) and he tends to actually walk longer in the rain if he’s wearing it. He let me put it on him, tail a wagging as I gave him a treat, but when I opened the door and he saw the rain he looked up at me and said “You tricked me!”  …YUP! Out we went. He just stood there on the lawn, head down, tail hanging limp. I wish I had at least my phone on me to have snapped a pic.. even I felt sorry for him and wanted to go back in and let him wait it out, but I knew he must be ready to explode from holding his “poop” for 24 hours now.

pug in raincoat

"Wait, you tricked me with a treat!!"

Luckily I had some dog kibble in my pocket, which is what I use for treats. He really doesn’t care either way, as long as he’s given something for his suffering. I managed to get him walking up the side walk at least. I let him kind of take the lead, but the lead was at a snails pace so, I had to pick up the pace a little or his bowels would never start churning. I tempted him with a piece of kibble and he obliged and followed me faster, well, he followed the hand holding the kibble. We managed to make it to the back of the building, which took about 15 min when it usually takes 5. We made it to the grassy area where all the dogs in the neighborhood go and even though it’s disgusting that a lot of people do not clean up after their dog, this morning I was thankful….not only was Otis not enjoying his walk in the rain, I was starting to not like it either due to the fact we were walking so damn slow that even with my umbrella, I was getting soaked, too. I took him right over to where another dog went (and the owner left it) and one whiff was all it took…. YEAH!!!!  It must have felt like such a relief to get that out. Otis looked so happy now.. of course it was bigger than him LOL, probably due to missing his outing last night, and I think he was proud of his accomplishment. He turned and RAN down the street, jumping over puddles, literally dragging me behind him. “Are you in a hurry to go in, Otis?”

Wet Pug

"Can you get me a towel, please!"

We made it back in the house in record time. Otis shook himself off and ran around all happy to be in. I think Otis and I both are really hoping the rain stops before our next outing otherwise, Otis won’t be budging from his comfy spot on the bed! Luckily for him I don’t care for rainy days either and plan on being just as lazy….well, after I fold the 2 loads of laundry he is currently laying in and get some dishes done…..then we’ll both be snuggling together happily with a good movie on or a good book.

Snuggly Pug

Pug Profile

Deep in thought Tomorrow is Saturday!

I don’t know why everyone makes a big deal about Friday. I did the same stuff today as I did any other day this week with the exception of going for a couple car rides to the park and PetSmart (I was out of food and I demanded we go get some!). This morning mom still got up and fed me and dad still left and didn’t take me with him for a ride. The boy usually leaves, too, but that’s ok since I really have no idea where he goes, it’s probably someplace boring.

Wait, I just thought of why they make a big deal….because tomorrow, Mom will cuddle me longer, dad will not leave and he’ll cuddle me, too… and the boy, well he can leave if he wants to, but we usually play when he finally gets his lazy butt out of bed (haha get it? A pug calling a boy lazy).

Falling Pug

"I am fine, I won't fall off"

This morning while mom was, hmmm I don’t really know what she was doing…I was trying to sleep. All I know is the flash went off – again – and then she laughed and moved me more onto the bed….said something about an accident waiting to happen..whatever, I was comfy!

Mom left me for a little while this morning…I was sad…I wanted to go, but she had her running shoes on and it’s too early in the day for that. Can’t we go to the park and see my friends instead? I decided to just sleep while she was gone. When she got home she had something that smelled divine! I was following her around trying to get a glimpse of whatever was emitting that aroma~ once she settled onto the sofa with the tv on, I jumped up…maybe a little too quick for mom, she yelled…BUT she dropped a little morsel and I scooped it right up. I really didn’t care that it was just a piece of diced tomato, it was YUMMY!

Begging Pug

"Can I have some?? No?!"

She was not happy and called me a bad boy (I don’t like that very much), then I was delegated to the floor while she ate and I just stared at her, watching every bite she took. She ignored me! When she was done, I jumped back up next to her to see if she had any left to share. She didn’t.

She finally took me out..I was about ready to go on the corner of the sofa, but was able to restrain myself once I noticed she was preparing to take me out, so I met her at the door. We walked up the side walk and we heard this ferocious sound of a dog barking. There is a very mean dog on our street..he does NOT like other dogs and I can’t imagine he cares too much for cats either. I did my best to ignore him because mom told me to, but I finally had enough and barked up a the window as we passed…OMG that beast threw himself at the window, teeth bared and foaming at the mouth. The glass actually shook. I think mom freaked a little, she jumped and then started walking fast…I was almost at a run by then! Mom didn’t take me up that sidewalk after dinner…we went the other way…PHEW!

Well, I’m getting sleepy..gonna hit the hay…well, actually soft sheets on mom and dad’s bed, but you get the idea. Until next time…

Fun Pug Day – March 3, 2011

Published by under Pug Adventures

Pug Tail Stubborn Pug! He was in no way going to do his business this morning. It was too cold for him. We had to go back in and get his jacket and even then he did not want to be outside. He dug his little paws into the ground and stood his ground, giving me the evil eye. I was not giving up. I think he forgets sometimes that I am bigger than him. I picked him up and walked him over to a grassy area where I knew lots of other dogs have gone….it worked…the scent was just too alluring for him. Once he was done, then he decided it wasn’t so bad out there and wanted to go for a walk…oh no, I was cold, too and now it was my turn to want to go in! Sorry, Otis!

Yesterday was an interesting day for Otis, meaning we did something out of the ordinary. The weather was in the low 60′s and the sun was shining, so I decided to wash my car in the driveway and also clean out the interior. I don’t think my car as seen a cleaning cloth since last summer! I had Otis tied to the porch so he could be free to wander around while I washed the car. Bucket full of soapy water, I then proceeded to wet the car down…after I hosed down the one side of the car, I see Otis on the sidewalk, way out of the way of the water spray! “Otis, how the hell did you get over there, wait..where is your harness?!”…it’s still tied to the porch! Otis wanted to watch, but wanted to make sure he was FAR away from any spraying water. I decided to put him in while I washed the outside of the car. He was not happy about that.

Pug in the Car

"Um, you missed a spot!"

Pug in the Car

"Can we go for a ride now?!"

Time to do the interior. I saw Otis flat up against the glass of the doorway pleading to come back out. I put him in the car with me while I cleaned the interior…he was a good boy! He let me know when I missed a spot!! The car finally was smelling good and looking clean. Kids were coming home from school and Otis watched as they walked by, wanting to get out and run to them to say hello. Finally, we were done with the car cleaning and he was such a good boy that I took him to the park! He ran and ran and then slept the rest of the day and all night! :) Until next time…..

The Diagnosis – Feb 28, 2011

Published by under Pug Adventures,Vet Adventures

Otis at the vet

"Keep that thermometer away from me!"

Over the weekend, when the light from the open door hit Otis’s face just right, I saw a pretty good size dark spot on his eye. It use to be a lot smaller and he was already diagnosed with Pigmentary Keratitis (can cause blindness) a few months back. Well, the fact the spot was much larger, off to the vet we went. (Click pic to right to see the spot – left of pupil).

Now, if you remember the last time we went to the vet, we dealt with a faulty thermometer and had to take poor Otis’s temp 3 times! He was not pleased about that to say the least. Well, this time when the tech went to get the thermometer in the draw, Otis freaked and started climbing up my chest trying to get away from her and that “stick”. Fortunately for Otis, the tech did not have any disposable covers, so he was off the hook…this time!

Shortly after a quick over view with the tech of how Otis was doing, we waited patiently for the vet to come in. The vet came in shortly after that. She gave Otis the once over. Yes, indeed the spot was much bigger and she put him on 2 types of eye drops, one for inflammation for the eye irritation, and the one to slow the progression of the pigmentation….she said that sometimes it will even cause the pigment to lesson :) He will now be on eye drops for the rest of his life. Thankfully they are not too expensive. The vet also looked at some red spots in his groin area and the inside of his elbows.

Pug is not happy

"Just give me the treat and I'll be all set!"

The vet said this looks like a yeast infection caused by an allergy. Wouldn’t you know it, we had changed his food a few months back to a more holistic, natural one (Blue) but that is when I noticed him starting to lick himself in those areas. I had a suspicion that he had an allergy to the new food, but I wanted to give it longer…I mentioned this to the vet and she said that the new food may be higher in protein, which may be just too much for Otis, causing an allergy. Or who knows, there could be a vegetable in there he is allergic to.

The vet went to that same drawer that the thermometer is in only to get the light to look into his eyes and ears….whoa!! There Otis goes trying desperately to get away.  I think that drawer and the thermometer incident will haunt him for the rest of his life! As soon as he saw it was not the thermometer, he calmed right down and let her check in his ears and eyes. She noticed lots of wax built up deep in his ear, which also can be caused by an allergy. Well, back on his original food he goes (Royal Canine – Pug formula).

So, we left the vet’s office with eyedrops, an antihistamine, ear cleaner and yeast pills! Oh and Otis weighed a whopping 18.9 lbs! Until next time……

Otis the pug

"Hmmmm what to do?!

Today was a pretty quiet day. Nothing too exciting happened. We all woke up by 7:30 and just laid in bed watching, of course, Holmes on Homes…one of hubby’s favorite weekend shows. Otis stayed buried deep under the covers cuddled up against me. He was not eager to get up either, that is, as long as neither one of us said the phrase that would cause him to jump up in a tizzy, foaming at the mouth. That phrase would be “hungry, wanna eat?”. Nope, we both kept quiet this morning to see just how long Otis would lay quietly next to us. Well, we made it about 20 more minutes, then Otis peeked his little head out from other the covers and just stared at me. I think he was telepathically telling me he was hungry and ready to get up. I tried ignoring him, but I could feel his eyes on me. I think hubby said the words first, or words close enough that got Otis’s attention. Up he jumped, ready for the day.

Pug face

"Can I go?!"

I had to get to the post office this morning to get my best friend’s birthday present out to her. Her birthday is Monday, so not sure it will get to her in time, but at least it won’t be a week late. I’m bad with remembering dates and their presents are always late, but they do get there! Poor Otis, the look on his face when he watched me getting ready. They know the signs. He also knew he was not going with me this time. He quietly followed me from room to room and even walked me to the door, still holding onto the hope that I would change my mind at the last second and take him with me. Sorry, Otis. :(

Sad Pug

"I'm sorry, daddy"

When I came home, Otis was waiting at the door for me, his little curled tail just a wagging away. Rich came down and we all sat and watched a little tv while deciding what to do today. Otis has a thing about running up to the TV and barking when he sees another dog on the screen. Hubby has a thing about not liking it ha! We’re trying to break him of it, but it’s been a losing battle….well, today I think Otis may be on the road to resolving this little issue he has. He did what he usually does and ran to the tv, barking away and then jumped up and put his paw on the TV. Oh Oh, that was a no no! Hubby would NEVER hurt Otis, but he is not afraid to use his vocal chords. He yelled so loud at Otis and picked him up by the scruff (NOT hurting him) and set him far away from the TV and told him to STAY. They proceeded to have a staring contest. At this point, I actually had to chuckle. Otis was giving Rich a run for his money. Otis was NOT looking away. I thought, man, this little dog has some big ones! Rich did not give up either and finally Otis submitted and laid down. We all went back to watching Pit Boss. Again, a dog appeared and Otis jumped up and just as he was about to bark, hubby yelled loud and quick, “UH, NO!” then sternly told him to go sit! Otis took one look at him then at me and ran to me and went up behind me and laid on the back of the sofa with his head resting on my shoulder. Hubby just looked at us and shook his head and of course I just smiled! Otis never made another sound the whole time, even when other dogs were on the screen. I think at this point, just a loud UH, NO and SIT will work….we’ll see.

Until next time…

Angry Pug

"I don't want to go out!"

Why does it have to be wet out! I was so excited to go out, too! She opens the door, I’m about to go out the door…whoa!!….everything is too wet for me! I turn to go back in, but mom said ‘nope, you gotta do your business’  That’s right, it is my business and I’ll do it when I want! I do NOT want to do it outside in the rain, thank you very much. I can hold it, honest….and if not, I’ll just go poop on that sofa over there where it’s nice and dry!

Well…she didn’t buy it…I had to traipse up and down the lawn looking for the best place to go, trying not to get my feet too wet…do you know how hard it is to get a good scent in the rain AND stay dry??? Finally…done…can we go in now?  :)

Pug in the Laundry

"You can fold this later, thanks"

Rainy days make me sleepy, but that’s one of my favorite things to do. SLEEP! YES, she did laundry!….Know what that means?? Nap time!!  As soon as she puts that mound of beautiful, warm laundry on the bed, I’m going for it! Ahhhhhh nice and warm….now to find the most comfortable spot. Wait, stop….you don’t have to fold it yet!! Can you come back later and do it?  Oh well, so much for that.

Pug Butt

"I think I can get it!"

Mom and I played a little bit this afternoon before my afternoon nap. I got one of my toys and we played fetch..she threw it and it went under the sofa…now why did she have to do that? “Can you get it for me…no?!”  I had to squeeze myself under there to get it, but I got it! We had fun. One time she wouldn’t give me my toy and I jumped up and grabbed it, so then we played tug-o-war. She won :(

Pug Play

"Yay!! Got it!!"

After all that running around playing with mom, I needed to take a nap! The sun is actually out now, but I still don’t feel much for walking today. She took me out after lunch and the wind just about blew me over..I did not like that so much, things were blowing everywhere and a piece of paper blew right at me and hit me right in the face…mom chuckled, but I did not think it was very funny! She picked me up, though, and brushed me off and hugged me….She took care of that old piece of flying debris and threw it in the trash….I love my mommy!

Well, it’s nap time again. I’m just gonna take a snooze now and then when I wake up it will be time for DINNER!! I just hope she gives me more this time. She is not very good at filling my bowl! There is plenty of room for more..doesn’t she see that?!

*Investigating, Honest! – Feb. 24, 2011

Published by under Pug Adventures

Otis the Pug

"What was that?!"

I told her it wasn’t me, but she didn’t believe me! I was just minding my business, chewing on my Kong, when I heard this little voice say “the door is open, go for it!” I had no idea where that voice came from or what door they were talking about. I thought I’d just check out the bathroom since that was the closest door I saw. There it was….the trash can! I had to go investigate to make sure nothing or no one was hiding in it, of course! Nope, nothing, nada! I made doubly sure there was nothing in that trash can. Wait, huh? Why are you yelling at ME?! I didn’t do anything. I was just investigating, honest!  I’ll help you pick it up…oh ok, you can do it, I’ll just go wait over here!

Pug got into trash can!

"What?! I was investigating!" (click to enlarge)

Geesh, I don’t know what her problem is, but I think she needs to chill, I was only trying to make sure nothing was hiding in the trash can, doesn’t she know that? I think it’s time for my nap, anyway.  I’ll just get out of her way and go downstairs to my favorite nap place and take a snooze. This investigating made me sleepy.

No School?! – Feb. 22, 2011

Published by under Pug Adventures

The alarm goes off at 6am, like every morning. I hear this young boy’s voice holler from the down the hall “We have no school!”  Your kidding me, right?!  When I finally get up and look out the window, I see a dusting of snow and it looks like there may be icing, but the sun is already coming up and the sky is clear. A one or two hour delay would have worked. Well, at least now Otis has a playmate today and I can get some stuff done :)

Otis the pug having his breakfast

"Wait, there doesn't seem to be as much food here as last time!"

My husband fed Otis his breakfast this morning. It’s usually me, but sometimes Otis will hear Rich down stairs preparing to leave for work and Otis will race down in the hopes that there will be breakfast waiting for him in his dish…and usually daddy hears him coming and fulfills Otis’s wish (of course, Otis still has to wait for the “ok” word before he can dig in!) After hubby has gone and Otis is done eating (I think today was the closest to normal speed that he ate!), I take Otis out for his walk. He doesn’t mind the snow, but hates getting his feet wet, so he kept jumping over the slushy snow until he found the best place to do his business. He also didn’t dilly dally with that this morning either, since it was wet and cold out.

The boy and his dog

"Give me my toy, please!"

Otis hung around me for a little while. We played fetch for a bit, Otis running up and down the hallway, bringing me his toy and then he fell asleep on my lap while I did some real work. Then to Otis’s dismay, I had to get up and head out to my hair appointment. Oh my, the look on Otis’s face when he realized he wasn’t going with me and that he had to stay with Jeremy. “Oh no, not the BOYYYY!”  I never thought Otis’s eyes could get any bigger or bulgier!  Don’t get me wrong, Otis loves playing with Jeremy, but Jeremy can be clingy with Otis and holds him when Otis sometimes does not want to be held. He’s done this since Otis was a puppy, so Otis has learned when Jeremy is headed in his direction, turn around and go the other way! You really can’t blame the boy for wanting to hold Otis all the time, he’s just so damn cute and cuddly! BUT, the end result of holding a dog when he doesn’t want to be held is the dog fleeing in the other direction when he sees you coming ha! Otis does, however, like playing with “the boy” when he has energy to burn and Jeremy has his favorite toy!

Otis and Jeremy played quite a bit today while I worked and packed more stuff for the move. I made it to the gym in time to meet hubby. When we got home, I started our dinner, but not before feeding Otis (which was later than usual and he let me know it!) and then we took our last little walk for the evening, which really wasn’t a walk so much as a 5 foot back and forth pace on the lawn until nature rang. He had to find just the right spot, ya know!

The house is quiet now. Everyone else has gone to bed, including my Otis, who is in bed with daddy…but will soon move from daddy’s side to my side as soon as I’m there :) Until next time…
